7 Steps to Setting Successful New Years Intentions

Every January 1st, many of us make resolutions for the new year and many of those resolutions are broken. Some even say that resolutions are made to be broken. Many have given up on making them all together as they never actually stick to the practice of making these resolutions a reality. When we make and then break resolutions, it often leads to us to feeling badly about ourselves and our perceived failures.

According to Dictionary.com the definitions of resolution is:

– The act of resolving or determining upon an action, course of action, method, procedure etc

And the definition of Intention is

– the end or object intended, purpose

Resolutions tend to be about the “what” and generally do not include the “why”. Intentions focus more on the purpose of the goal we want to achieve. Many times new years resolutions revolve around losing weight, making more money or having more of something in ones life. By setting intentions versus just making resolutions, we are adding the reason for the goals we are setting.   It’s always helpful to know why we want these things and even more helpful to think about the feelings we want to generate by having them. Ultimately, we all want to be happy and happiness is a feeling.

If we can put our focus on what we truly want, and the reason behind that, versus on what we don’t want (i.e. unwanted weight), it is much easier and more natural to follow the course that is required to achieve our goals.

Steps to setting successful intentions for the new year

  1. Decide on what you want
  2. Ask yourself why you want to accomplish this
  3. What is the feeling that you ultimately hope to get from this?
  4. What actions are required to get there?
  5. After setting your intentions, narrow them down to the top 5 and prioritize them over the rest this year (I find this step important as if we have too many intentions, we won’t have enough time to devote to each one)
  6. Figure out action steps and put them on your calendar (provided they are steps you can schedule)
  7. Go back to revise as necessary

My top 5 intentions for 2015 are:

  1. To increase my capacity to give and receive love
  2. To live on purpose and add value to peoples lives through my writing
  3. To continue my education and advance my knowledge, particularly in the areas of body work and life coaching
  4. To be gentle with myself and stay open and positive in the face of adversity
  5. I won’t bore you with my financial goals for the year, however, I do have them and I consolidate them all into 1 intention

As an example, I will apply the top 4 steps to one of my intentions:

I intend to live on purpose and add value to people’s lives through my writing

I want to accomplish this because writing is an excellent way to share who I am and what I have learned with others and to express my creativity. The feeling I ultimately hope to get from this is fulfillment and connection to others on a larger scale.   The actions required to get there include continuing with my practice of writing my blog every Tuesday, editing on Thursday and then posting no later than Friday. If for some reason, this schedule no longer works for me, I can always revise it later to one that works better.

Some intentions don’t necessarily have specific action steps associated with them that can be scheduled. My intention of being gentle with myself and staying open and positive in the face of adversity would be one example. I can, however, have some steps associated with this intention. For instance, when I find myself faced with adversity, I can spend some time, contemplating, meditating and writing about it. I can also connect with loved ones and be open to their support as well as any feedback they may have to share with me. How I am dealing with adversity, will then give me feedback on how I am doing with my intention.
